Leadership Spotlight: Whitney Findlay – Board Liaison, Impact Awards

2019 Leadership Spotlight Series

Whitney Findlay is Board Liaison for Impact Awards at CREW Detroit and is the owner of Findlay Investments LLC.  Whitney joined CREW in 2014 to expand her network and invest in both her personal and professional growth. Being a part of CREW Detroit has given her friendships and mentors that are invaluable.

Under her leadership, the Impact committee is responsible planning and organizing the CREW Detroit Impact Awards, a premier CRE event in Metro Detroit. This group is responsible for soliciting a call for entries, gathering recognized industries professionals as judges, and coordinating and managing the full event from start to finish.

Why did you join CREW? And how long have you been in CREW?
I have been a member of CREW-Detroit since January 2014.  I joined CREW, at the time, as a recommendation from my boss as a way to gain business and invest in both personal and professional growth for me.

Why is CREW important to you?
CREW is important to me for far too many reasons to name.  As a small business owner, it serves as an incredible tool to help me stay current with insight and knowledge in our local commercial real estate market.  This is a result of our events, networking, and simply staying in touch with our diverse membership.  I am always proud to say that I am a CREW Detroit member whenever I first meet someone.

Why should people within the CRE industry join CREW?
If not to gain business and grow your professional network, then for the education and access to the industry resources it provides. Exclusive looks at upcoming developments and access to high profile speakers and industry insight, locally, nationally, and even globally.  Also, because it is a platform to highlight your own success and contributions to the CRE industry whether it be through our e-news or even your profile on crewbiz.

Can you share a #crewsuccess story? Job Opportunity?  Project Opportunity?
I have received both job and project opportunities through my CREW network.  Some have been unsuccessful while some have been very successful.  A recent example is that through my brokerage I received the opportunity to invest in a local franchise.  Throughout the acquisition and construction of the store, I was able to utilize many of my fellow CREW member companies for insurance, accounting, and construction.  It was the perfect opportunity to utilize my network.  Additionally, I have gained a few broker clients through CREW as well.

3 things I wish I had known early on to elevate my professional career:

  • Always trust your own judgement. Don’t let others influence big career decisions.
  • I wish I had gotten involved in CREW or even other associations much earlier in my career.
  • Don’t ever think you are stuck in a position or at a company if you’re not 100% happy.  There are so many opportunities out there. Be happy. Whatever it takes.

What advice would you give a new Member?
Get involved!  Begin to utilize your network however you can.  Come to events, join a committee, invite members to coffee, lunch, or happy hour.  Take advantage of any relationship you have because you never know where it will lead you or who it will lead you to.

Who were your CREW Sponsors?
Ellen Mahoney and Leslie Zawada
