afg & crew-detroit 2004 activities

The CREW-Detroit Community Outreach Committee had a very active and productive year again in 2004. AFG truly appreciates their relationship with CREW-Detroit. This bond continues to grow and develop as time goes on.

In 2005, Committe Chair, Linda Doolittle will find more opportunities for CREW-Detroit members to volunteer and assist this wonderful organization that truly is making a difference in the city of Detroit and effecting positive change for the city as well as southeast Michigan.

December 2004 - Project Giving Tree: CREW-Detroit donated an all-time high 100 gift bags for this annual event. Each bag included three to four gifts chosen from a "wish list" for a total value of $35 to $50 a bag.
November 2004 - new "clothes closet" – Four of us worked for several hours on a Saturday morning organizing the new Infants and Children's Clothes Closet, which is right next to the regular Clothes Closet.
October 2004 - Gleaners Food Bank work day - Several CREW members along with several AFG clients, worked side by side at Gleaners Food Bank sorting frozen foods from ice cream and ice cream bars. Brrr....it was cold!
August 2004 - Back-to-School Party - We provided backpacks and school supplies and an upbeat start to the school year to nearly 150 girls at the annual Back-to-School Party.
May 2004 - Role Model Dinner - We supported AFG's Annual Role Model Dinner with our financial sponsorship, as well as attendance by more than a dozen CREW members.
Spring 2004 - Pewabic Pottery tour - We took a group of AFG moms and daughters to Pewabic Pottery to tour the facility and make a piece of pottery. Several of us participated in spring cleaning at the AFG facility in Detroit.

afg & crew 2003 activities

December 2003 - Project Giving Tree: CREW-Detroit donated 94 gift bags for this annual event. Each bag included three to four gifts chosen from a "wish list" for a total value of $35 to $50 a bag.

October 8, 2003 - Appreciation Dinner: Approximately 30 CREW members attended a spectacular dinner complete with poetry readings, presentation of appreciation certificates and a modern dance routine -- all honoring CREW-Detroit. The girls in AFG's Transition to Independent Living Program suggested the dinner to celebrate the close relationship between AFG and CREW, and to say "thank you" to CREW's members. It was a very special evening which will not be soon forgotten by CREW members. Special thanks to Dolores Oakley of Lockwood Management and Jill Ferrari of ASTI for coordinating this event!

August 26, 2003 - Back-to-School Party: To watch the magic in the eyes of a young child when she opens a bright-colored backpack and finds crayons, pencils, papers, scissors and other school supplies (all brand new and all hers!) is sheer delight.

Our third annual Back-to-School party moved to the very spacious, cool and comfortable Ford Room at AFG's new home on West Grand Boulevard, where the room was filled! CREW-Detroit and its very generous sponsors Standard Federal Bank and Ramco Gershenson, plus many other individual and corporate donors, purchased more than $9,000 in school supplies for 155 girls grades K-12 and nine college freshmen!

Once again, the party was a huge success and attracted media coverage from two local TV stations. Kim Burgess of REDICO arranged for three different teachers to speak to the girls (split into three different age groups) about school, their attitudes, responsibilities and possibilities. These ladies added such a wonderful component to the evening. We'd like to thank Renee Badalamente, Amy Mixa and Sue Pavlakos, for giving their time and talent.

The evening's highlight came as we presented AFG's Wendy Coles a check for $20,000 (representing nearly all CREW-Detroit's 2003 golf outing proceeds) to assist AFG during a very trying time fiscally. Wendy had tears in her eyes as she proclaimed that CREW-Detroit was AFG's best friend.

June 21, 2003 - Work Day at Gleaners Food Bank: CREW members and girls of AFG will again work side-by-side sorting food, filling food boxes, etc. Last year, this was a wonderful experience for CREW members and the girls both. The girls were fulfilled knowing that they can be on the “giving side” also; that they too can make a contribution. We are hoping to make this an annual event!

May 1, 2003 - CREW nominee wins AFG Role Model award: CREW-Detroit members and guests gathered with representatives from Alternatives for Girls at the Role Model Dinner held May 1st at the Detroit Yacht Club. We enjoyed our delicious meal with AFG staff, sponsors, volunteers, and community leaders, in addition to many young women who have benefited from the life-changing services provided by Alternatives for Girls.

We look forward to this annual fund-raising event where we have an opportunity to honor two women selected as Role Models of the Year. These women are selected for their outstanding contributions to society in general, and more specifically for their personal and professional efforts in mentoring young women.

The honorees this year were Claire Roberts and Brenda Rosenberg. Claire has served as Chair of the Community Outreach Committee and has done an outstanding job representing CREW in our community. We were pleased and proud to celebrate this honor with Claire and her family. Her tireless efforts in support of AFG, in addition to many hours devoted to her church, community, and family are appreciated by many. She is clearly a worthy recipient of this honor.

In addition to honoring Claire, this annual event was a wonderful reminder of the positive impact AFG has made in the lives of young women who need help from someone, somewhere. Thanks to each of you who have contributed your time and talents and care enough to “make a difference”.

February 10, 2003 - Housewarming party: Twelve CREW members braved the snow and slippery driving conditions to enjoy dinner with staff members and clients of AFG. After dinner we were treated to tours of the new building and got to spend time with some of the girls from the shelter. They showed great pride when they showed off their kitchen, their bedrooms, and their living room.

CREW members through their own personal generosity and through proceeds from last years Annual Golf Outing presented over $6,000 worth of household items from a snow blower to spatulas, mop buckets to mixing bowls! AFG Director, Amy Good, walked along the display of gifts with tears in her eyes. Wendy Coles, Director of Development & Strategic Initiatives wrote in an e-mail the following morning, "Thanks for such a special night last night. The staff is feeling very upbeat today, truly feeling the love and support that we receive from CREW."

Thank you for all of the generous donations and participation by so many members. AFG truly feels blessed for the relationship that they share with CREW-Detroit.

AFG needs you! The work of AFG will likely never be completed. Sadly, there will always be a girl or young woman at risk, but with the support of CREW-Detroit and other agencies, corporation and individuals, they are making strides in our community. Please consider participating in one or more upcoming events. You will walk away the richer person! To learn more about CREW-Detroit and AFG, contact Claire Roberts at 248.948.9000

help AFG add beds!
AFG needs your help in capitalizing on a unique opportunity to raise funds to add 10 much-needed beds in its shelter next spring.

The McGregor Fund will award AFG $90,000 to open these much needed beds, if AFG can first raise $90,000 in new donations between Oct. 1, 2004, and April 30, 2005. That means a $10 donation becomes $20, a $100 donation becomes $200, etc.

As you evaluate your donations in preparation for your 2004 tax returns, please consider making a tax deductible donation to AFG.
