Opening your notebook to that first sheet of fresh
paper. Putting an unsharpened No. 2 pencil in a sharpener and turning
to create that long, luxuriously thick curl of yellow. Hearing the
vibrant crackle of cellophane as you tear open a package of shiny
new pens. Smelling the aroma of freshly inked handouts. New clothes.
New shoes. New school supplies. A new school year.
On Aug. 28, CREW Detroit members get a chance to help
create those special memories for the students of Alternatives
for Girls with the chapter’s annual AFG Back-To-School
Party. We’ll host a pizza party at AFG’s Detroit headquarters,
and present new backpacks stuffed with fresh school
supplies and a personal gift to more than 160 young girls in
AFG’s Prevention Program. We can fill their backpacks, and
we can fill their vision of the future with the power of belief
in themselves.
When
Thursday, Aug. 28 • 5 – 7 pm (please
note time change)

Donate
- School supplies –
To purchase and donate supplies from the official list,
please e-mail Ellin
Callahan so we can reserve your spot on the list for the items
you would like to contribute. The committee will provide information
about a collection point for purchased items, or these may be
sent to Ellin Callahan, Hobbs & Black, 100 N. State Street
, Ann Arbor , MI 49104
- Cash – please mail
your check to Kim McMahon, Grubb & Ellis, 26555 Evergreen
Road, Suite 500, Southfield, MI 48076
- Journals - Each student
will be given a blank journal to write their goals, dreams and
thoughts. Goal setting is a powerful too. If we can encourage
these girls to set goals and achieve them, they will learn how
to believe in themselves.
- “Girl goodies”
– Young girls need to feel good on the inside as well on
the outside. Hairbrushes, ponytail holders, lip balm, a small
lotion – these are basic, natural ways to freshen up for
the school year and to make them feel special!
Volunteer
Members are invited to attend the Aug. 28 party
as chaperones to meet and talk to the students. Bring your memories
of your back to school experiences, the challenges you faced (not
dissimilar to theirs in many ways) and how hard work and persistence
helped you succeed. Be a kid again for the afternoon! To volunteer,
e-mail Ellin or Alicia
Buisst (alicia_buisst@keybank.com)
